Aero vs. Comfort

How to choose between a trisuit with or without sleeves for triathlon competitions.

Choosing the right trisuit isn’t just about aesthetics or tradition. In triathlon, every detail counts, and there are few decisions so difficult as this one: do I prioritise aerodynamics or comfort? Within the Athlex trisuit range - our most accessible range without losing sight of performance - this question has two clear answers: the Athlex Aero Race Suit with sleeves, and the sleeveless Athlex Race Suit.

This doesn’t apply to everyone, however, as it depends on how and where you compete, and most importantly, how you want to feel during the race itself.

The Athlex Aero Race Suit was born with a specific goal in mind: it was designed to reduce air resistance in the cycling segment, thanks to the aerodynamic fabrics incorporated into the shoulders, arms and back. Although not something you notice directly, the result is continuous efficiency mile after mile.

On top of this, the suit’s highly elastic fabrics offer you a snug fit, allowing you to swim in total freedom without restricting your stroke - because aerodynamics shouldn’t get in the way of your swimming, and it’s here that this trisuit strikes an interesting balance.

On the other end of the spectrum is the sleeveless Athlex Suit, offering a different experience that focuses less on aerodynamics and more on the sensation of freedom. Many triathletes who prioritise comfort opt for this kind of suit; you can appreciate the airiness of the sleeveless design right from the off, making it an interesting option for those who can’t seem to find a suit that fits comfortably in the arms. This equals less fabric, less pressure points and less distractions.

Both suits incorporate Vapour Cool technology, which plays a key role in more demanding routes and races that take place in high temperatures. The evaporation of sweat and dissipation of body heat are more efficient, especially with the improved side panels in the torso. In the case of the trisuit with sleeves, the extra fabric in the shoulders and arms not only contributes to aerodynamics, but also acts as a layer of protection against the sun, while the sleeveless version prioritises direct ventilation.

And then there’s cycling comfort: both suits incorporate a 4mm Italian Tri-Tech bike pad with high density, providing you cushioning on your bike without getting in the way of your running. It’s there when you need it, but disappears from your mind once you’ve left your bike in the transition zone.

So, how can I choose between the two?

If you’re competing in short distance events, such as sprint or Olympic style, where efforts are more explosive and you spend less time on your bike, the sleeveless Athlex Race Suit is the more logical option. Its lightweight feel with direct ventilation gives you the sensation of total freedom that works in your favour.

On the other hand, as distance increases and we come to middle and long distance events, the Athlex Aero Race Suit’s sleeves go from a small detail to a major ally in the cycling segment, as they allow you to take full advantage of the aerodynamics for longer, and additionally offer ongoing protection from the sun during hours of exposure.

In the end, it’s not about choosing between performance and comfort as opposite concepts, but rather about understanding what you need in each race. Because there are days you push yourself to the limit… and days you simply go with the flow.

How to measure yourself

For best results, take your measurements with no clothing on

Place the measuring tape over the widest part of your chest.

Hold one end of the measuring tape in place and circle your chest, keeping the tape straight, until the tape reaches your starting point.

Get a book, a hand mirror and a pencil.

Take off your shoes and anything you wear on your head.

Look for a level surface to stand on with a smooth wall behind you.

Stand in front of the wall with your feet together.

Balance the book on your head and press it against the wall. Use the mirror to check that it is in a horizontal position and well centered. Mark the position of the top of your head on the wall with pencil.

Once the mark is made, step away and use a measuring tape to measure the distance from the ground to the mark you just made with pencil.

Step on the scale, without clothes or accessories, and write down your weight.
