Orca wants to encourage you to start practicing Swimrun in the best possible way and so today we are back with a post focused on the footrace portion.
Training for a Swimrun footrace can be different than training for a more traditional race.
The use of specific equipment, constant transitions, long distances, different terrains and having to keep pace with your partner make this a much more complex endeavor than simply running a long distance race.
This is why it is important to consciously structure your running training in order to get as close as possible to the real conditions that you will face during the race.
TIP 1 | Training with Your Partner
There aren't many races where you compete in pairs and therefore it is important to get used to running with a partner as soon as possible. Remember, you can't be more than 10 meters apart from them during the course of the race!
It is important that you begin training together so that you can get to know each other and adjust to each other’s rhythms, and figure out whether you can work together throughout the whole event, whether one of you will have to carry the other through the footrace or whether you'll be taking turns.
Working through all of these scenarios will help you to be more coordinated on the day of the race and for each one of you to know what role they will have on the big day.
TIP 2 | Adapt to Different Terrains
In a swimrun race, you may have to run on different terrains such as gravel, asphalt, sand, rocks or dirt.
It's possible that the terrain could be the same throughout the whole race, but it also might vary from one race to another, so it would be interesting to try to recreate the characteristics of the terrain you will be on for the race and make sure that your footwear is perfectly suited to the different terrain types to avoid any surprises on race day.
TIP 3 | Practice Running with the Right Equipment
Test out the equipment you will need for the race during your training to make sure that it won't cause any problems and you won't have trouble with equipment on the big day. This is particularly important when it comes to swimrun.
It is primarily important that you begin running with your wetsuit on as soon as possible. In addition to it feeling different, wearing a wetsuit during a footrace can affect your hips and it is definitely very different from swimming with traditional running tights. This is even truer if you opt to trim your old triathlon wetsuit instead of using a specific Swimrun wetsuit that is designed to make the footrace easier, so it is important that you try running with it on as soon as possible.
Besides this, most of us are not used to running with wet shoes. No matter how comfortable your dry running shoes are, it is tremendously important that you get used to running with wet shoes, as this is how you will have to compete in your next swimrun. Not only does it feel different, but the accumulated water will make a difference in the weight you are carrying and this can alter your stride.
Finally, bringing accessories with you that improve your swimming may seem like a great idea while you are swimming, but remember that you will also have to carry that equipment during the footrace. It is important that you begin carrying that equipment with you and decide whether the advantage of using it for swimming can be an advantage or a disadvantage during the footrace.
In the next video, our swimrunners will tell us about the importance of this type of training.
