How to put a wetsuit on from the inside out

Steps for putting on your wetsuit correctly without damaging the outer fabric

How to put a wetsuit on inside out

It’s not that easy but it’s not that hard. Although putting on a wetsuit may seem challenging to a beginner, this advice will help you put one on properly and avoid movements that could damage it. A very helpful way of doing it that helps to avoid tearing and damaging the material is to turn the suit inside out. The outer surface of the wetsuit usually has a hydrodynamic finish and is more delicate than the inside. By turning it inside out, we avoid tearing the suit and we make it easier to put on.

Step 1: Turn the wetsuit inside out

To start off we’ll need to turn the wetsuit completely inside out so that we can protect the most delicate areas and handle it with greater ease.

Step 2: Put your feet in

You can use socks or even a plastic bag. When you put your foot into the suit with a sock on, there’s less friction and your foot enters smoothly without creating resistance. Put one foot in first and then the other.

Step 3: Adjust the wetsuit in the leg area

Once you have both feet inside, gripping the wetsuit from the inside, pull it up over your hips, pulling it up to your knees first, then up to your thighs and eventually up to your hips, holding it from the inside at all times.

Step 4: Adjust the wetsuit in the crotch area

It’s very important that the suit is worn properly and fits snugly in the crotch area, as this will determine whether the upper part of the wetsuit is in the correct position. Finish pulling the wetsuit up over your hips and get ready to put your arms in.

Step 5: Arms

At Orca we give you a pair of gloves with your wetsuit so that it’s easier for you to get your sleeves on. Slide the wetsuit up along your arm and adjust the shoulders. Do the same with the other arm and adjust the other shoulder. Take your time to adjust the position of the wetsuit and to get your arms in properly.

Step 6: Adjust the neck and close the zip

Make sure that the wetsuit feels comfortable around your neck, check that it fits snugly in the crotch and shoulder areas and zip it up. You could get someone to help you if you find it easier.

Step 7: Final check

Finally, move around a little to check that the suit isn’t too tight or too loose. The wetsuit should feel like a second skin: tight-fitting but without restricting your movements or breathing.

How to measure yourself

For best results, take your measurements with no clothing on

Place the measuring tape over the widest part of your chest.

Hold one end of the measuring tape in place and circle your chest, keeping the tape straight, until the tape reaches your starting point.

Get a book, a hand mirror and a pencil.

Take off your shoes and anything you wear on your head.

Look for a level surface to stand on with a smooth wall behind you.

Stand in front of the wall with your feet together.

Balance the book on your head and press it against the wall. Use the mirror to check that it is in a horizontal position and well centered. Mark the position of the top of your head on the wall with pencil.

Once the mark is made, step away and use a measuring tape to measure the distance from the ground to the mark you just made with pencil.

Step on the scale, without clothes or accessories, and write down your weight.
