How should your wetsuit fit you?

The essential aspects to take into account when choosing your wetsuit size in order for you to get the most out of its use

How should your wetsuit fit you?

Choosing the right wetsuit and making sure it fits correctly is fundamental in any water sport that requires one, whether it’s surfing, freediving or open water swimming. A well-fitting wetsuit not only improves performance but also provides you with greater comfort and safety in the water.

In order to identify the ideal fit, we’ve got to pay attention to the following key points:

- Chest and neck circumference

The suit should fit you snugly in these areas in order to prevent water from entering and to keep your body at the right temperature. A suit that’s too small could cause a feeling of tightness, making it difficult to breathe and preventing you from moving your body in a way that’s comfortable for you. On the other hand, a suit that’s too big will let water in, which will negatively affect your buoyancy and body temperature.

- Elasticity in the shoulders

Essential for efficient swimming without restrictions. If the suit is too tight in the shoulders, the material will stretch in excess and will limit your range of movement, meaning you’ll be swimming in discomfort. It’s fundamental that you test the suit by moving your arms in every direction to make sure you can do so without any limitations. A suitable fit in the shoulders will allow a complete and effortless arm rotation.

- Crotch area

The crotch area should fit snugly but not too tightly. If it’s too loose, wrinkles will form that could cause you discomfort and greater resistance when swimming. If it’s too tight, it will pull down from the shoulders, limiting your range of movement and causing discomfort in your upper body area.

- Length of the suit in the arms and legs

The length of the arms and legs should be correct, ending at your wrists and ankles so as not to interfere with your swimming. A suit that’s too short will not significantly affect your performance but a suit that’s too long definitely will. Excess material in the arms and legs can create resistance and can make it more difficult for you to move.

- No gaps between your body and the wetsuit

It’s essential that there are no gaps between your body and the wetsuit. The gaps let water in, creating extra resistance which will slow you down. In addition, water that accumulates in these areas can cool quickly, affecting your comfort. A well-fitting suit should fit your body like a second skin, without loose areas or wrinkles.

How to measure yourself

For best results, take your measurements with no clothing on

Place the measuring tape over the widest part of your chest.

Hold one end of the measuring tape in place and circle your chest, keeping the tape straight, until the tape reaches your starting point.

Get a book, a hand mirror and a pencil.

Take off your shoes and anything you wear on your head.

Look for a level surface to stand on with a smooth wall behind you.

Stand in front of the wall with your feet together.

Balance the book on your head and press it against the wall. Use the mirror to check that it is in a horizontal position and well centered. Mark the position of the top of your head on the wall with pencil.

Once the mark is made, step away and use a measuring tape to measure the distance from the ground to the mark you just made with pencil.

Step on the scale, without clothes or accessories, and write down your weight.
