From the lab to the waves

We visit the OrcaLab, where Ander López, Product Manager, tells us about the Orca surf range and gives us his tips for choosing the right surf wetsuit.

For more than 25 years, Orca's mission has been to provide open water swimmers with the tools to safely and comfortably enjoy every epic and revitalizing moment in the ocean. Despite being a brand that was linked exclusively to triathlon at the beginning, with some internal reflection, we decided to support additional water sports, sharing our knowledge and love for the oceans. We have gradually added items to the product portfolio for open water swimming, swimrun, freediving and now for surfing.

We launched the Tango wetsuits for surfers in September 2022, after several years of hard work and development. Ander López, Product Manager at Orca, tells us that this arose naturally. As a brand specializing in wetsuits, tied to the sea and its different sports, it became a priority to bring this knowledge, acquired during all these years in other disciplines, recreation and high-level competition, to the sector.

In a few words, Ander defines the Orca surf wetsuit as an incredibly elastic wetsuit with unparalleled thermal comfort. Never-before-seen technologies in the surfing world have been applied to these suits that give them a competitive edge.

Elasticity, thermal comfort, perfect fit and durability.

These are our technical priorities when designing wetsuits. There are numerous laboratory tests that can help us with these characteristics. All of them, along with fit, should also be tested in the field, with all kinds of people (not just top-level athletes), so that we can better approximate the way these products are really used in our community.

Finally, Ander shares some tips for choosing a surf wetsuit:

  • Know what you need, that is, what type of wetsuit and the technologies that are best suited to you.
  • Choose your correct size.
  • Be sure to purchase a wetsuit from a recognized and reliable brand in the market.

How to measure yourself

For best results, take your measurements with no clothing on

Place the measuring tape over the widest part of your chest.

Hold one end of the measuring tape in place and circle your chest, keeping the tape straight, until the tape reaches your starting point.

Get a book, a hand mirror and a pencil.

Take off your shoes and anything you wear on your head.

Look for a level surface to stand on with a smooth wall behind you.

Stand in front of the wall with your feet together.

Balance the book on your head and press it against the wall. Use the mirror to check that it is in a horizontal position and well centered. Mark the position of the top of your head on the wall with pencil.

Once the mark is made, step away and use a measuring tape to measure the distance from the ground to the mark you just made with pencil.

Step on the scale, without clothes or accessories, and write down your weight.
