INTERVIEW

What do you do? What is your profession?

I’m a professional triathlete.

How long have you been a triathlete?

I’ve been a triathlete since 2001.

Do you think your education or your career has helped to prepare you mentally for racing?

Of course the experience is a plus! In my case I´ve been training for many years, since I was 15 and this is what makes me a better athlete year by year.

Have you been an athlete all your life or did you have some sort of epiphany that got you into it?

Yes, I’ve been triathlete since 2001, but when I was young, I played football and swam for a swim club in Barcelona.

What do you do when you're not training or racing?

I like the beach, sunbathing, windsurfing and dining out with my friends in Barcelona.

What’s been your worst moment in a race?

Last year is a good example, I was sick three days before the first WTS event in Abu Dhabi. During the winter I was training a lot and I wanted to have a great race in the first WTS of the year. However my result was very bad in Abu Dhabi, then also bad in Auckland, Gold Coast and Cape Town!

How did you overcome this?

At the end of April, when I was back home I decided to stop training because I wasn’t ok. Two months later, in July, I had my best race of the year, getting 7th place in the European Triathlon Championship in Geneva.

Tell us the main differences you see between physical and mental strength.

I can explain the differences easily. Sometimes I feel my body needs to stop, but then it's mental strength that allows me to continue and not give up.

When you feel you can’t go any further, when you want to give up, what goes through your mind? What does your body tell you and what does your mind come back with?

When my mind is running out of energy I remember all the time I spend training daily and all the support of my family and friends. That gives me a good reason to continue.

How do you normally feel before the start of a race?

I feel a little bit nervous but I’m very focused on giving my best.

In triathlon is it necessary to have inner strength? Be made of iron maybe?

All you need to do is train a lot and believe in yourself.
