Hello Swimrunners! Today we have something to keep in mind when training for a race: the weather conditions you will face on race day.
Sometimes, while training for swimrun, weather conditions can be unstable and change easily from one hour to the next. For this reason, you should know how to avoid conditions that are too cold or hot by bringing the right equipment to the race so that these do not negatively affect your performance.
TIP 1 | How to Avoid Carrying Unnecessary Equipment in Unknown Weather Conditions.
As we mentioned in the beginning of this post, you may be preparing for a race without a clear idea of what the weather will be like on race day. But you can fix it by packing before traveling to the location of the race.
To avoid bringing unnecessary equipment with you, our first piece of advice is as easy as looking at the weather report for the race site up until the last moment before traveling, so that you can get an idea of what to expect and make the best decision about which equipment to bring with you during the race.
Finally, another option for those who do not want to be thinking about what equipment to bring with them up until the last minute, could be choosing a two-piece wetsuit so that you can take off the top if it gets very hot.
TIP 2 | Choosing the Best Equipment for Warm Weather
In some situations, it can be very cold at the beginning, but then get warmer during the race.
In these cases, your best option to avoid wearing warmer clothes during the race and opt for an accessory that can easily keep you warm and that is lightweight to carry, such as calf guards, a neoprene cap or even a one-piece swimrun wetsuit with removable sleeves.
If you choose one option or another, you must remember that everything you use during the race will have to stay with you until you cross the finish line.
TIP 3 | Choosing the Best Equipment for Cold Weather
Contrary to what we see in warm environments, sometimes the racing season begins during periods of lower temperatures, and it is crucial to prepare for this as too low of a water temperature can cause injuries if you are not well prepared.
This makes it more difficult to decide what equipment to bring with you than in warmer weather because you have to maintain your body temperature at the same time as your flexibility of movement.
The easiest solution is to use accessories such as calf guards or to wear a long-sleeved wetsuit. In any case, remember that the wetsuits are not made for swimming in temperatures below 16º Celsius.
