2. How long have you been a triathlete?
I'm doing duathlon for 4 years and 3 years triathlon
3. Do you think your education or your career
has helped to prepare you mentally for racing?
Every bad experience I had in life or sport makes me angry and for me anger is a gift! I need anger to race and to be prepared for the suffering!
4. Have you been an athlete all your life or did you have some sort of epiphany that got you into it?
As far as I can remember I am an athlete: I started to play soccer on my 6th age. When I was 12 I had a bicycle accident on my way home from soccer training. I took me half a year to get back to normal live and I lost my spot in the soccerteam. I started to run crosscountry races and combined it with cycling. When I was 15 I had to choose a sport because the combination was difficult. From then on I was a cyclist for 10 year but I never reached the level of a pro athlete. In winter time I start running again to maintain my condition. I tried a duathlon and like it that much that I switched from cycling to duathlon. A year later I started swimming and did my first triathlon!
5. What do you do when you're not training or racing?
I have a litlle daughter Laurien who takes all my free time!
6. What's been your worst moment in a race?
My first swimstart ever, I never thought it was such a fight and was not prepared for it!
7. How did you overcome this?
Constantly thinking that quiting was not an option, counting down the meters and thinking my bike was waiting in transition area to race.
8. Tell us the differences you see between physical and mental strength.
There not that different for me: Physical and mental strength you both have to train them before a race. You get the physical part by doing kilometers of training and you get the mental strength by making a mental race plan: what keeps you going? What are the things you keep in mind when the going gets tough? You need mental strength to train your physical strength and you need physical strength to have confidence that gives you the mental strength you need to achieve your goals!
9. When you feel you can't go any further, when you want to give up, what goes through your mind? What does your body tell you and what does your mind come back with?
When I’am running the final kilometers of a longe distance race I always keep in mind that there is a huge gap between your mind telling you to stop and your muscles who will actualy stop working. So when I’am feeling like slowing down I just think it is a brain thing and keep going
10. How do you normally feel before the start of a race?
When my preparation before the race was perfect I’am relax and happy that I finally can show everyone how hard I trained!
11. In triathlon is it necessary to have inner strength? Be made of iron maybe?
When you do 3 sports on 1 day for at least 8 hours everyone needs inner strength to get to the finish line. You need something inside thats push you forwards when you have that weak moment. With an iron mind you now quiting is never an option!
