March 27, 2014

The 2014 season for Team Orca kicked off with a bang this past weekend with our athletes involved in multiple events in the Southern Hemisphere.

Ironman Melbourne, which also doubles as the IRONMAN Asia-Pacific Champs saw Asa Lundstrom, Philip Graves and Courtney Atkinson all lining up for the start. Courtney excelled in his first ever Ironman race, coming in at 15th while Philip eased his way into the new season with a respectable 17th. Frustratingly, Asa was left to wonder what could’ve been as she sat in the bike penalty box for 4mins – her final placing of 5th was still an amazing result – also giving her valuable points towards Kona qualification!

Meanwhile, over the ditch in NZ the New Plymouth ITU World Cup took place with Matt Sharp the sole competitor from Team Orca after Non Stanford had to pull out due to injury. This early-season sprint distance proved a popular warmup attraction for the opening of the ITU World Champs series in Auckland next week with many of the top athletes on the ITU circuit turning up to compete. Not surprisingly the pace was fierce and the top athletes very close – our own Matt Sharp’s 12th placing was a mere 1 minute off the winner!

Looking forward to this coming weekend, Orca is off to Cali! The California 70.3 will see Andrew Starykowicz, Albert Moreno and Sebi Kienle all competing in what is sure to be another action packed weekend of racing!
