PHYSICAL STRENGTH IS NOTHING WITHOUT FOCUS AND SELF CONFIDENCE
TAMARA GÓMEZ

INTERVIEW

What do you do? What is your profession?

I spend a big part of my time doing triathlon, but I also study Marketing.

How long have you been a triathlete?

I discovered this great sport in 2009, and I start training triathlon in 2010.

Do you think your education or your career has helped to prepare you mentally for racing?

I think so. I grew up with the lessons that if you want something you have to fight for it with all your heart, despite of the difficulties in the way, so I try to make use of it in my triathlon live.

Have you been an athlete all your life or did you have some sort of epiphany that got you into it?

I’ve been always in touch with sport. I began to swim at the age of 5 and I’ve practiced some other sports like equestrian and athletics. It was in an athletics competition with my school (when I was 18) when one triathlon coach from my hometown saw me and talked to me about triathlon.

What do you do when you're not training or racing?

When I’m resting between seasons I spend as much time as I can with my family and friends who are at my hometown, I really like party and go out with my friends.
I love travel not only for training and racing but also for sightseeing, a good beach with good waves is what I like the most to visit.
And I also enjoy a lot a good book.

What's been your worst moment in a race?

The worst moments for me are always when something that I can’t control like a flat tyre show up and make me lose opportunities to do a good race.

How did you overcome this?

When something is not under your control is difficult to handle it, but I try to stay calm and fix the situation as fast as I can. If it´s not posible I try to channel my impotence into strength for the next race.

Tell us the differences you see between physical and mental strength.

They are different in origin but I totally think that physical strength is nothing without focus and self confidence, because as many people say, our body listens everything that our mind says.

When you feel you can't go any further when you want to give up, what goes through your mind? What does your body tell you and what does your mind come back with?

When I feel like this I usually think about why I started to do this triathlon thing, and it’s because I feel happiness with it. Sometimes we feel tired about something but when I imagine myself achieving any of the goals that I want to achieve, I know it is worth.

How do you normally feel before the start of a race?

I would like to feel quiet but the truth is I always feel nervous, but it’s not an unpleasant sensation.

In triathlon is it necessary to have inner strength? Be made of iron maybe?

Not at all. You just have to be tenacious, hard worker, and above all, enjoy what you are doing.
