Non Stanford's Top 5 Tips for Triathlon Travel

ITU champion Non Stanford spends a lot of her year travelling, whether it's to a training camp or a race, so has learnt abit in this time. Save yourself some unnecessary hassle on your next triathlon trip by following her top 5 travel tips!

Travel for triathlon's can be quite daunting - dealing with the share volume of gear required for a race that has three disciplines, as well as time zone changes, dietary adjusments and still following your training plan can be difficult! You can learn by trial and error, but why not save yourself the trouble and just get some great tips from one of our athletes who's done it all before!?

These are ITU Champion Non Stanford's top 5 tips for travelling for triathlon:

Tip 1: always pack one set of training kit, your race shoes and trisuit, and spare undies in your hand luggage! You never know when your luggage might go wandering! And no ones likes the inside-out and back to front trick really.

Tip 2: if you need to pack light forget the toiletries. You get freebies at nearly every hotel in the world. And they do sell shampoo in foreign supermarkets you know!

Tip 3: always carry your favourite snacks. Travelling rarely goes to plan and can be stressful. Don't make it worse by getting 'hanger'! Some of your favourite healthy snacks in your backpack often come in useful when you're sitting on an unexpectedly long transfer. Don't they know dinner time was over an hour ago?!

Tip 4: travelling takes its toll. Even that short haul flight or those few hours down the road in the car. If you've got a travel day don't stress about cramming in training. Take an easy day (or few days if travelling long haul) or even better a day off! Your immune system will thank you for it!

Tip 5: take your own pillow! I often have difficulties sleeping when away and find that having my own pillow can improve my chances of a good nights sleep. Which is one of the most important things at a training camp or in the build up to a race.

How to measure yourself

For best results, take your measurements with no clothing on

Place the measuring tape over the widest part of your chest.

Hold one end of the measuring tape in place and circle your chest, keeping the tape straight, until the tape reaches your starting point.

Get a book, a hand mirror and a pencil.

Take off your shoes and anything you wear on your head.

Look for a level surface to stand on with a smooth wall behind you.

Stand in front of the wall with your feet together.

Balance the book on your head and press it against the wall. Use the mirror to check that it is in a horizontal position and well centered. Mark the position of the top of your head on the wall with pencil.

Once the mark is made, step away and use a measuring tape to measure the distance from the ground to the mark you just made with pencil.

Step on the scale, without clothes or accessories, and write down your weight.
