Highlight On: Allgau Triathlon
The oldest triathlon race in Germany, and in arguably one of the most beautiful locations, the Allgau Triathlon was first run in 1983 and is on again this weekend! On Sunday there will be three of Hawaii's Ironman World Champions lining up: Sebastian Kienle, Thomas Hellriegel and Faris Al Sultan, making for an exciting race! With Al Sultan having announced his retirement back in May 2015, the fact that he is still racing Allgau reiterates the love that athletes have of this iconic race.
Organised superbly for the past three years by a team headed by 1985's Ironman World Champs runner up Hannes Blaschke, what makes this iconic race such a destination for the top athletes in triathlon as well as hundreds of other budding triathletes? The location and layout of the race would have to be key. The bike course is breathtakingly beautiful as well as demanding. The highlight of this course through such a steep landscape would be Kalvarienberg with a vertical climb of 16% that is luckily always crowded with spectators to cheer on the cyclists to the top. The swim, transitions and finish line are all located in one spot in Buhl/Alpsee, making this race perfect for getting to see your loved one several times out on the course during the race.
Check out the highlights from last year's race below, and you'll see why you should be making plans to be there racing in 2016!
