What do you do? What is your profession?
I am a professional triathlete.
How long have you been a triathlete?
I have been a professional triathlete for four years. Before this, I was a professional mountain biker.
Do you think your education or your career has helped to prepare you mentally for racing?
Yes of course. Being mentally strong is essential to the performance of an athlete. Racing the MTB World cup for years has equipped me with important tools for both triathlon and my life. Allthouth of course I still try to improve more every year.
Have you been an athlete all your life or did you have some sort of epiphany that got you into it?
Yes, I have been an athlete all my life.
What do you do when you're not training or racing?
I use this time to stay with my family and friends. To get outdoors, go to the movies…The athlete life is training, rest, travel and compete, so taking time out with the people who love you is very important.
What’s been your worst moment in a race?
My last worst moment was in Xterra Worlds 2016, I was leading the race but in the running I hit a wall physically and lost all enegy. Finally I finished 3rd but this was 8 minutes down on first place.
How did you overcome this?
I tried to stay focused and not think about the consequences, but just to keep my stride up, focus on my breathing, and go as fast as I could.
Tell us the main differences you see between physical and mental strength.
There aren't many differences between physical and mental strength, both you can train and must continually keep training them to retain this strength. The main difference is that mental strength can also help you in every moment of your life, in every moment to manage every situation.
When you feel you can’t go any further, when you want to give up, what goes through your mind? What does your body tell you and what does your mind come back with?
I only think positively, try to see the positive side of the situation. I remember and visualize good feelings doing what I do in that moment.
How do you normally feel before the start of a race?
Peaceful and focused.
In triathlon is it necessary to have inner strength? Be made of iron maybe?
The most important thing is to enjoy what you do. Wake up and listen to a voice inside you saying I want to do this. This inner voice is the thing that has the most inner strength, this voice moves the world and people. When you follow this voice you can do what you decide to do.
